The LEED Platinum Method manufacturing plant in Chicago has won ENR Midwest's 2015 Best Green Project Award. A manufacturer of eco-friendly home, fabric and personal care products, the design of the facility followed in the company’s philosophy in being environmentally friendly. Gotham Greens, a Brooklyn-based urban farm, owns and operates the facility's rooftop greenhouse.
KJWW provided MEP, fire protection, technology and structural design, along with architectural lighting for the plant, which includes manufacturing space, a warehouse, and offices. The manufacturing area includes designs for bulk material handling and storage, batching tanks, mixing vessels, filling equipment and bottling -- each with their own requirements for isolated slabs/foundations, spill containment, and overhead pipe trestles.
The plant is primarily powered by a 600-kW wind turbine, with solar-thermal water heating and three solar-tracking trees in the parking lot. Read the award feature on the ENR Midwest website. For more information on the engineering design, read the KJWW case study.
